There was once a time where if you wanted something good to eat, you’d have to go downtown. Now (thanks to gentrification), Harlem is filled with tons of gems. There’s a resurgence of restaurants that specialize in more than just soul food all over Uptown.
Last week, my best friend and I were looking for a quick bite to eat after The Internet concert and stumbled across Harlem Pizza Co.
The brick oven pizza restaurant, located right on 116th between 7th and 8th, caught our eye immediately. If you live in Harlem, you know that its very rare to get a decent slice of pizza around here. Let alone a good one. As a self proclaimed pizza princess, I was curious to see what Harlem Pizza Co. was all about.
We were greeted by the chefs and handed menus almost immediately. Though the menu was filled with calzones and numerous pizzas that sounded delicious, it was the “Hot Bird” caught our attention.
The “Hot Bird” is a pie topped with arugula, gorgonzola, mozzarella, chicken with hot sauce drizzled all over the top. Honey, there aren’t enough adjectives in the world to describe the taste of this pizza. The gorgonzola (which is Italian blue cheese) made the other flavors of the pizza pop and helped to take the dish way above any buffalo chicken pizza that you’ve had before.
The pizza has eight slices which is the perfect sharing size if you’re on a date (or if you just want to demolish it all by yourself)!
Though I made a vow to stay away from carbs (thanks to Rihanna’s body in the “BBHMM” video), my best friend talked me into getting dessert. I ordered the peach trife, a beautifully layered dessert fresh peaches layered with broken oatmeal cookies, fresh whipped cream and a touch of cinnamon. The taste of the trife made cheating on my diet (that only existed for 8 hours) worth it.
My best friend and Nutella addict ordered the popular Nutella calzone. The calzone was stuffed Nutella and sliced almonds with fresh whipped cream on the side.
Though the food was pretty damn good, what was even better was the price. Dinner and dessert cost us just $30!
From our awesome waitress to the friendly chefs, the atmosphere at Harlem Pizza Co. was all around amazing. I’ll definitely be going back because this spot has the best pizza in Harlem!
Whether you’re going on a date or just exploring Harlem and looking for a bite to eat, make sure you checkout Harlem Pizza Co.
