As a girl trying to grow out of her streetwear/cozy girl aesthetic, I’ve been learning to appreciate high fashion more. This was my first year getting to do anything involving New York Fashion Week— and I was excited!
I kicked off my fashion week attending the Birchbox x Milk Makeup NYFW event and Kendall and Kylie Samsung event with my friend Dee! While the Milk Makeup event was a surprising favorite, the Kendall and Kylie event left me wanting more.
So as NYFW winds down, I wanted to highlight the fashion week event I enjoyed the most— Iman Alexander’s Santa Cruz SS17 capsule viewing.
I started following Iman Alexander a couple years ago while I was on the search for a classic leather jacket to add to my wardrobe. Though the jacket and many other pieces in the collection sold-out quickly, I continued to pay attention to the brand as it was different from what I’d seen from others and black-owned.
Saturday afternoon, my friends and I headed to Brooklyn’s Ode to Babel for an intimate viewing of Iman Alexander’s Santa Cruz S/S 17 capsule.
When we arrived, we were greeted by owner and designer Ebony Alexander— she was super sweet and easy to talk to which I believe is important when it comes to creating and keeping customers. She walked us to the back patio and showed us the capsule.
The capsule featured three fierce looks— when I say looks I mean LOOKS. As Ebony left to attend to other guests, one of the models began speaking on how comfortable she felt in Iman Alexander’s clothes. For me, comfort comes first when it comes to clothes. The fact that the model was able to speak about how good she felt in the clothes was a big plus to me!
The red see-through dress was easily my favorite, but I knew damn well it wouldn’t be a dress I could wear out without being stopped every three seconds.
The piece I could see myself wearing was the paisley inspired off the shoulder bodysuit. I could easily add this to my budding wardrobe. It could be paired with a skirt for a cute date night or with my go-to high waist jeans for a casual day out in the city.
The black ruffle two-piece was also a favorite of mine and the model wore it well!
After speaking with the models, we went back inside to enjoy the chill festivities. The capsule viewing was sponsored by Red Stripe, so we enjoyed the sounds of Ella Hussle as we sipped on endless Red Stripe.
The looks for Iman Alexander’s Santa Cruz capsule collection will be available soon and in different colors according to Ebony. Support black businesses and stay updated on Iman Alexander by following the brand on Twitter.
